Those "surveys" are worthless, as we can all tell.
My '88 900 starts every time. The last time this car failed to start was in June of 2000, one hundred ten thousand miles ago. That was a dead Hall Sensor in the distributor.
The car is on its original wheel bearings also (218k) while the dealership I used to work for was replacing dozens every week at 60k (imagine a two-year-old car being driven into the shop with the right rear wheel locked up) and all sorts of little junk.
What else is original? Let's finish jinxing the car. All four driveshaft joints (inner and outer), the starter motor, all the relays except for the defroster, the ventilation fan, seat coverings (cloth), wheels, gauges, the engine (still gives great mileage and pulls up hills), timing chain, the entire head (you're supposed to check the valve clearances every 30k? HA!) all the switches except for the high beam/turn signal stalk, locks and latches, window regulators, the wiper motor, glass (August '87 datestamp proudly shows on the windshield), control units (all three of them), and even all the central lock actuators except for the trunk. Even more fun is that the 8 valve motor has loads of low end torque and you don't have to worry about air mass meter or AIC failures, just change the idle regulator every 75k.
Unfortunately, my mom's car ('99 brick with 117k) wouldn't start for the twentieth time last week. When you replace the ignition switch, the clutch switch died six months later. After that, the neutral switch (for idiot-proofing) died six months later. After that, the starter motor, the start relay, and another clutch switch. This time, it was another start relay. I'll take the humungous electrical connectors and contacts on my 900, thank you.
Maybe I'll throw a warm-up regulator at the car, only because I'm a nice guy...
Yeah, I guess some other cars use belts instead of chains? The key is up under a locking steering column? How quaint!
