When I worked at a saab shop in high school the mechanics used to do this thing that shocked me the 1st time they did it, but I then realized is normal. They'd listen to the turbos sing in the shop.... like 4 mechanics, 4 cars... vvvrrring vrrrring vvvrrrung! it was a little funny.
But it taught me that you can very quickly rev a turbo engine while idling and cause partial turbo spool up. It might - for uninitiated - startle you under the hood but:
Start car from cold. Let idle for 15 secs or so to get oil pressure up.
With hood open blip the revs 1 or 2 times slightly using the throttle body (NOT gas pedal). Then VERY quickly pull the throttle lever and rev the snot out of it. If you're quick the turbo will spool about 1/2 into the yellow... Don't really kill the car or hold revs high for long, you're going for turbo spool up here and the car isn't yet fully warm, remember.
And you'll hear your noise. Maybe. A turbo contacting the housing at a certain temperature point should do it irrespective of whether the engine is under load or not, so I imagine you might hear your noise doing this.
Hope it helps.
