I usually keep the cars until past 100k miles...
Since 1979:
Toyota Supra (1st year) 105K traded in for 1985 924 Saab
Said 1985 900T - 190k miles traded in for 1992 9000CDT auto
1985 900T wifes - totaled in accident (broadsided) in 1987
purchased 1987 900S - 386K miles later... sold to guy 2 months ago for $1k, R-12 AC still works (put in new compressor about 10 years ago)
1992 9000CDT still have it, 268K miles.
various used Saabs purchased another 1992 9000CDT, 1994 Aero, 1996 Aero, 1991 c900T vert, 1987 c900T vert, 1991 900S 4door auto, and a whole raft more c900's
I always do the breakin as described and have never had to replace anything internal to the engine, head gaskets don't count. No rings, pistons, bearings, chains, sprokets... nothing.
but I have been running Mobil-1 exclusively since 1979. I do change at 5k miles intervals with a new filter. I figured if synthetic was good enough for my two stroke dirt bike in the desert heat of the mojave... it would be ok for my cars too. Well over 1.5 million miles later and I haven't changed my mind.
