Yes, you do have to move the compressor, but it's not difficult at all.
1. Loosen the A/C pulley and remove the A/C belt. You have to loosen it all the way, unless your belt is really old and stretched.
2. LOOSEN, BUT DO NOT REMOVE the 12mm bolt at the bottom of the A/C compressor mounting bracket. The "hole" in the bracket is actually a cut-out, not a hole. If you remove it, you're going to have a hell of a time getting it back in and you're going to kick yourself after realizing that you really didn't have to. It's slow and annoying to do this, but a normal-size open wrench is all you need. If you happen to have a flex-head ratcheting wrench, you might be able to go at it from above, but otherwise you want to reach around the brake master assembly. I'm thinking that this is a lot easier if you don't have ABS.
3. Remove the two hex bolts at the top of the A/C compressor mounting bracket. Be careful not to drop/lose the spacers.
4. Rotate the compressor towards the firewall, pivoting on the bottom bolt. Depending on what all you have to do, you may be able to get away with leaving the bottom part of the bracket attached. If you need more room, just lift up on the compressor to slide it off the bottom bolt. You'll still want to do the rotating/pivoting first, though. It's much easier to put everything back if you don't detach the bracket from the bottom bolt.
5. Whatever you do, don't try to undo any A/C hoses (not to insult anyone's intelligence, but you never know who might read this). Just move it out of your way. Also, I want to make it clear that following this method does not require loosening alternator belts, removing the alternator bracket, or removing the intake manifold...these steps are not necessary and would lead to serious irritation (no offense, previous fellow poster).
6. As many of us have read countless times, installation is the reverse of removal.
