The one thing that wasn't discussed at the start of this question was which car/engine we're discussing. I know that on the older 8 valve engines, there is quite a bit of access space around the water pump. It's been awhile since I worked on an 8 valve, but I remember working on the water pump was rather easy, especially without an AC bracket and compressor in the way. With the 16 valve, the access space around the water pump is reduced, mostly because of the larger head and intake manifold design. With a 16 valve 2.1 head and intake manifold like on my car, the space is reduced even more because of the intake manifold being larger than on the 2.0 head. Because I was curious, I just went out and looked at that area on my car to find that even with the AC bracket moved aside, there was no clear access to those water pump hose connections. If I need to get to those connections, I have no choice but to remove the intake manfiold. Perhaps the 2.0 head provides more room. I don't remember.

Also, I'm wondering if there aren't different AC bracket designs - with and without the bottom slot. When I did my alternator, water pump and head work earier this summer, I removed both the AC and alternator brackets, and rotated the AC compressor with bracket so as to set on my windshield for the duration of the job. I would have noticed the bottom of the AC bracket was slotted, especially during reinstall. That compressor and bracket are from an 86 16V. Perhaps there were design differences over the years.
