I've done it both ways. I prefer pulling the engine, but I also did it from the bottom to see how it could be done, and also because I had replaced the engine/tranny the year before and didn't need to tend to any of the usual fixes with the engine out. If you have no room to pull the engine (no flat surface on which to hoist the engine and roll a picker around), from the bottom is doable, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have above average mechanical skills with all things engine and car. If done wrong you could end up doing a lot of damage to delicate engine components, plus hurt yourself in the process. I posted quite a few details on here about how I did it from below.
