Does the top threaded part of the shock not have a slot that accepts and allen key? I replaced my original shocks with bilsteins a few weeks ago and it had the nylock nut. Took me a few minutes to realise that a ratchet spanner and allen key were the bst tools for the job. Some shocks have a slot on the top which IIRC is 1/4 inch or 6mm. You can use a small open ended wrhnch on that and a larger spanner on the nylock nut.
