1. Due to the age of these car's and the lack of elbow room I alway's remove the cupler and don't bother with the pin. you will need to re-align the shifter when putting the car back together, the most effective manor is by pulling the front carpet and plastic air duct's exposing the shifter... so if you're looking to kill time you could pull the front interior out.
2. yes, just pull the filter housing, there is a gasket that will need to be replaced but not a big deal.
I don't understand your last comment about dropping the car off jackstands w/o the engine in place. You can put the car back on the ground post extraction, you just need to put the front end back together and your fine. All you need to worry about up front is preloading the spring's with spacer's. Saab has a special tool for this... and so do I, old ball joint's. Make sure you've chalked (inserted spacers) at the upper control arm's before pulling the front suspention apart.
depending on the region where you live your better off doing the work now while the weather is in your favor. It's not fun when your shoveing out to make way for the engine hoist.
