mentioned, there are other reasons why your shifter isn't doing the right thing. 1st, if you can lift up the leather boot around the shifter (there is a spring/band around the bottom holding it on) then check out what you see where the shifter shaft disappears into the car. there are two types (that i know of), one has 3 screws holding a metal ring down-which keeps the shifter ball down. if the screws are falling out, they need to be replaced, and done up tight. the other option is, as previously mentioned, the rubber coupler that is between the transmission and the firewall. there are 2 types there, also, and the one that has given me grief if the type that has a piece of rubber sandwiched in between two pieces of metal, with the metal top and bottom. you really need to be under the car with someone moving the shifter side to side. you can be up and running again with 2x1 1/2" hose clamps (autozone, atlantic around classon). use the hose clamps to hold the two plates together. or, get a new coupling ($100?).
And we'll have no more talk of new transmissions, thank you.
