How old is too old for tires? Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Fri, 16 Nov 2007 07:40:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I was driving my wife's 92 900TC the other day and got a bit of a scare when I went into an unintentional 4-wheel drift on a corner coming off the expressway. The road surface was damp but I drive this road every day, usually in my 9k, and have never had this problem before. The tires (Pirelli P400's) have plenty of tread on them but I think they are 8 years old (After the "DOT" on the wall of the tire there are some letters then a "9" - I think that means manufactured in 1999?).
Would it make sense that after 8 years the rubber has hardened and has given up some of its grip? Or were these just bad wet weather tires to begin with?
