I used a stubby wrench to lock/hold the nut- you might also try a crow claw wrench.
Then I used an [$10 atSears] "alligator" universal socket( the small diameter sized one with all the retractable pins in the socket) to turn/loosen the shock stem shaft. the slot top of the shock just fit into the center socket to be enclosed by the pins- just don't push the socket too far down on the shaft.
