Saabs and BMW's use a 3 watt bulb rather than the 5 watt 194. The hotter bulb melts the board and loosens the connection over time. I successfully filled the dimples with filler and "painted" on the window heater repair stuff to restore the film. Got pretty good at working backwards with a mirror by the time I was done.
Went to the cooler 3 watt bulbs before finally switching to LED's. LED's are both brighter and cooler so you can actually see the dash in the daytime. Don't buy green LED's! :-))
The direct wire solution is the most positive. Mind the polarity, so you don't get crosswise with the foil polarity.
