Personally - if you are doing this yourself and you have to rent an engine hoist, figure out how everything is removed from the engine, lift the engine on your own, replace and/or check all the various other crucial items that need to be checked - seals, o rings, chain guide, clutch and then do the additional conversion plus re-install the engine - I would say it would take more than a weekend (30 hours . I have not done the conversion but I have removed, repaired and replaced the 8 valve engine on my own and found it time consuming mostly just getting everything lined-up and so on.
You can do yourself a favour by doing all the additional work on the emgine that are oil seal related plus a few other maintenance items.
BTW my AT also gave out at approx 150,000 but I opted to have another put in since it was cheaper than eiher going the 5 speed route or buying another vehicle. I since trashed that car (when the engine developed piston slap) but managed to keep the head and various engine items.
