Hi, folks.
I previously complained on a small vibration when speeding up. I followed CMyles' post and checked radial play on both shafts but they both were about the same and I couldn't say that any of them was smth to worry about. So I decided to calm down and take it as a special distinguished feature of my C900 (late M1993, LPT (16V turbo, 142 hp, no intercooler), EU). Until I drove it this morning...
Car started fine, I gave it 15 minutes to warm up (while changing radio headunit's basket). After that I took off and... There was a sound. Dg-dg-dg. It appeared only on I and II gear on hard acceleration. Firstly I supposed I got wheel bolts loosened. Landing (better say 'touch'n'go'), checking, double-checking - nothing, all bolts are fine. Tire pressure ok. No cans attached to the rear bumper or exhaust. Ok, let's try it once again... Dg-dg-dg-dg.
Everything above leads to tripod bearing / inner driver. Right? Almost. I wonder why there was no sound after we made 12 miles? Yep, there might be such explanation saying that completely warmed engine has a bit less output comparing to cold one and with less torque from engine the load on transmission parts (incl tripods and inner drivers) decreases. But anyway it's strange.
So facts and question:
- there was a small vibration before when overtaking
- there came a strange dg-dg-dg sound this morning; no extra vibrations found
- sound disappeared after 10-12 miles
- car has 120K on its speedo and I believe it. It appears (windshield, clutch pedal, etc) that PO's used it mostly as a highway jet.
Is there any way to troubleshoot it w/o dismantling inner driver? Too cold and wet for such r'n'r here. Too pricey to order inner driver in advance.
