thanks very much Adam and Saabnutt. I'll try to consolidate my reply:
the feel of the clutch pedal is somewhat normal. what I have noticed is that you only have to release the pedal a very small amount to fully release the clutch. in other words, if I'm proceeding from a Stop light and I lift the pedal maybe an inch, the car is fully underway. similarly, if waiting at a Stop light with the clutch pedal fully pressed, the car will at times (not always) start to creep forward. almost like an automatic when you take your foot off the brake.
the clutch was replaced when the transmission was - I think the slave cylinder was too, but don't have the receipts here at work. I recall we looked to replace anything that should be replaced "as long as we're in there."
I'm going to try the turkey baster approach. I don't have a power bleeder, though have wanted to get a MitiVac with a bleeder function, largely to test for vacuum leaks (another prob). I recall Sears had one last time I was in there. I don't have ABS, so would love to be able to replace without bleeding, as I'm a little nervous about getting into where the slave bleed screw is, as well as doing the brakes. so I'll try siphoning off the top of the reservoir first as you suggest.
and I agree on the car payment thinking. it's not like I could replace the car with the $800 it could cost to fix and have something trouble free. we already have to look to replace (or supplement) my wife's 87 900t for something with 4 doors, so I'm not looking to give up mine if I can help it.
thanks again for your help.
