gauge, and my current one runs 1/3 up. the car seems to run fine, and the heat certainly still comes out of the heater so it doesn't seem to be a problem.
having said that, i'm more comfortable with the temp a little higher up, so i will be changing t/stat to 82 degree one and anti-freeze fluids just for my own piece of mind.
in looking at the existing green fluid, it does seem a little thick so i'm curious as to whether the po just poured it in straight to try and keep temps down.
preston if you're more comfortable knowing your t/stat is good by replacing it and flushing anti-freeze, then by all means go ahead and do it. don't forget a new t/stat gasket as well. i believe the t/stat is the same for all models '90 onwards.
as far as gearbox oil, it's the same as engine oil. the bentley manual says SAE 10W-30 SF/CC, SF/CD, SG. alternate gear oil for the manual trans is listed as SAE EP 75 API-GL-4 or API-GL-5.
i haven't changed to synthetic from dino oil, so i cannot comment on whether it gets leaky after doing that but i'm not willing to risk it yet.
mark :-)
