Dead cylinder and smoke

1990 Saab 900 SPG, ~300k. For last 8 mo, the car has been driven once a week for 50 mi.
My car sat at a store last night for 2 hours. It was very rough on startup and there was no power below a 2500 rpm. It felt like I lost a cylinder.
I drove 20mi to drop a buddy off. When I stopped the car I could smell burning. I could see some white smoke when I opened the hood. We agreed it was coming from the back of the engine on the driver's side. I couldn't identify the smell but I have definitely encountered it before on a previous Saab. The exhaust was pulsing so I am pretty sure a cylinder isn't firing. The oil read low so I added a quart, but I was on a hill. Coolant, temperature, power steering fluid were fine. I drove 10 mi home.
No pools under the car this morning, but the exhaust was still pulsing. As luck would have it, I couldn't get the hood open (it was a two man job last night) so I haven't been able to check the car in daylight.
Looking for suggestions on the smoke + missing cylinder. Any idea on how to simultaneously pull hood release while lifting up on the hood?
Thanks
Josh
