Is this my old SPG Josh? Minneapolis?
If so, there was the small, slow oil leak that I hadn't yet located. Not sure how often you check the oil, but I generally added a half quart mid oil change cycle. Also, the crank pulley (and seal) and oil pump housing o-ring were done, but it's probably been 70,000 miles. I would smell smoke occasionally, but always attributed it to the always leaky power steering return hose dripping onto the exhaust down pipe and right side inner driver throwing grease before I replaced it. The front (engine bay rear) of the engine looked wet, but the crank pulley wasn't, so it was difficult to ID the leak, but it seemed high pressure. Oil pooling on the valve cover would seem to indicate the vc gasket leaking - which could also be the reason for a plug misfire. Missing or rough running has always been a seasonal quirk (dampness and temp changes) with my 900's and could typically be corrected with a good cleaning of the AIC, new plugs, and vac hose inspection. On more than one occasion, under hood condensation (springtime and rainy weather) has caused arcing of the plug wire at the coil as well. Re-seating it and drying out always fixed it.
Good luck
