Yes, the nut needs to come off. This allows you to withdraw the drvieshaft from the hub. You will also need to undo the hose clamp at the inner boot. That way the whole driveshaft assembly can be withdrawn from the car. With the driveshaft out you will need to remove a small circlip to separate the outer CV joint from the shaft. You will now be able to slide the old boot off and slide the new one on.
Everything goes back together in reverse order. The boot kit typically comes with new grease, a new circlip and a new axle nut that replace the old stuff.
