If you are up for some DIY (soudns like you are) and the CV isn't clicking i say a 6$ boot kit is what i would (and have) done. Although the drive shafts aren't that expensive (about $80 around here) it really doesn't take that much longer to replace the boot. In eather case the driveshaft has to come out which is the bulk of the time you are going to spend on the job.
That said, if you are at all worried about the condition of the driveshaft you should definitely go ahead and replace the whole thing. I've had no problems with rebuilds.
