battery light on, alternator just replaced

My alternator was replaced a few weeks (and a few hundred miles) ago. On a long trip this weekend, my battery light started flickering dimly. As the trip continued, the problem got worse and then it actually seemed to disappear entirely. A couple hundred miles later, the problem returned and stayed fairly consistent for the rest of the ride home. I stopped at a random mechanic who checked the voltage and said everything seemed fine and that the battery was charging.
While this started as a flickering, it eventually became a solid bright light. The light would go away with the headlights off, and would come on every time I braked or put the lights back on. I drove at least a thousand miles like this, with no additional symptoms, so I can only assume that my new alternator is not bad.
As a novice, is there anything I can check for myself before taking it back to my mechanic?
Thanks!
