Alternators are meant to charge batteries. That is what they do. Yes, yours might have been called on to do a fair amount of work but alternators do that kind of work all the time. Many other people in many makes of cars leave lights on and kill batteries and after a jump start rely on their alternator to bring the battery back to full charge over time while driving.
Alternators do NOT die under that strain. They do sometimes fail while still fairly new but that would be rare and not your fault.
(Sounds to me as if he was covering his tail and getting ready to charge you all over again.)
My suggestions for what might be wrong are:
1. Bad grounding wire to the alternator. They sometimes crack, inside the insulation even. Or if that wire had been replaced, maybe it wasn't replaced with a heavy enough gauge of wire and that failed or is failing.
2. Slipping alternator belts, from some bolt coming loose since he installed it.
3. As already suggested, your crank pulley could be separating at the rubber layer and not spinning at full RPM.
4. If he installed a USED alternator, maybe it had very little life left in it, specifically, its brushes may be worn out. Brushes-voltage regulator unit is a relatively cheap repair.
5. If a new or rebuilt alternator, it could be defective (especially if a rebuilt) but they are usually covered by some kind of warranty. Ask your mechanic about that.
Do you have any other choices of shops to take it to? One that specializes in Saabs would be best.
