austin-did you get an entire engine and transmission? Posted by nicknick [Email] In Reply to: okay, got the engine, any last tips on removal?, Austin Underwood, Thu, 29 May 2008 09:21:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
if so, your life will be very easy.
first tip-remove radiator and fans. not worth damaging the rad, plus makes it much easier to manouver the lump onto mounts.
a/c off and resting on pass side windshield.
ps pump off engine and resting on rack (pay attention when pulling engine and replacing). the main pain with this method is the bottom mount for pump, it has a stupid bushing set-up and is difficult to put back together right.
pull oil filter housing and install on new engine. this is done when engine is approx 10" above mounts. you can use the open passage ways to prime the pump after you installed a new seal, also. (never liked the vaseline idea, myself)
disconnect coupler with the 13mm clamp. with the rad out you can manouver it back out, and also back on after wards. saves messing with pin while trans is in car. you can use your air tools on the pin once it's out.
have the new lump next to the car while removing old one. that way you can examine all hoses, etc, and make sure you are reinstalling with all the best parts, and doing this with the least number of actions.
swap over your pulley (you did get it on before this happened?).
install new front and rear seals, and oil pump seal. has to be done. i would through in a new HG while it was there, out of the car. same for obvious stuff like alt bushings, etc.
i never label anything. never use bags, either. pictures are good for me. if you pay attention to how you are dismantling it, you can easily take it apart in a way that it has only one way to go back together. turning bolts back into their holes a couple of turns after pieces have been removed means they are there ready to go upon reinstallation. obviously when putting in a new lump, you need to be thinking about the new engine here.
pull both bottom balljoints via the 2 bolts each side. undo the speedo cable while you are under there. same with the inner boot clamps. then just pull both sides out to disconnect shafts from trans.
decide from the beginning what you want to do about the clutch. i don't know how old yours is, or about the new one. but, you have to decide whether to disconnect clutch at the slave via hydraulic line, or remove entire clutch from car before starting-ever bled a clutch?
can't think of anything right now. oh, yes, don't mix up front and rhs mounts, they are different!
