Here is the excerpt from the 1992 900 owner's manual, in nasty red background shading, applicable to all 900s with ABS:
WARNING!
If the BRAKE FLUID and ANTI LOCK warning lights are illuminated at the same time, the car must not be driven. After several pedal applications, the brake pedal effort will increase unexpectedly and the braking effect will be greatly reduced. Note, however, that the operation of the handbrake will be unaffected. Failure to heed this warning may result in inadequate braking and possibly personal injury.
It goes on to explain the brake fluid light:
If the BRAKE FLUID warning light remains on, the car should not be driven and should be checked and corrected immediately...
When both of those lights come on, it is a signal that your ABS pump and accumulator cannot pre-pressurize the system enough. If both of the lights come on after 5 or fewer rapid stabs of the brake pedal, it is a sign of a leaking accumulator. If the lights come on while you are driving and not using the brakes, it is a sign of a badly leaking accumulator. Both lights should fire up when you start the car, the ABS pump runs to pressurize the system, and then the lights should turn off within ten or twelve seconds under any conditions, even if the car has been sitting for a long time. Anything longer than that and your accumulator is leaking back and not holding full pressure. This thing has to handle thousands of pounds per square inch, so it may fail gradually, or it may fail suddenly, on a hot day, on a downhill exit ramp.
When these lights are on, the reserve pressure in the hydraulic assist for your brakes has dropped too low to provide any substantial reserve. Get a replacement accumulator from gmpartsdirect.com for around $120 and replace it in fifteen minutes, then bleed everything. Don't drive with deficient brakes.
