there is a diaphram inside, with pressurized nitrogen Posted by nicknick [Email] In Reply to: ACCUMULATOR, ZAAB |
on one side, brake fluid on the other. when the diaphram fails, it fills the nitrogen side with fluid, and so it then becomes just a large ball of fluid, that cannot store pressure.
I have had various experiences of abs lights coming on at random times, my 92t would throw a light that would remain for the entire journey (so no abs feature, but plenty of power stored-think it was a sensor or connection to sensor), then not be on next trip.
some people always assume the accumulator is at fault as soon as the light comes on. while this is the common failure point, that doesn't mean you should run out and start throwing money at it.that being said, it appears they deteriorate over time, progressively.
do some proper testing. first, ign on, engine not started, you will hear the pump run for some seconds. the light will go out at some point. how many times you hit the break pedal is not absolute. you will see a massive difference in the number of times you can hit it, if you try different techniques. what is true is that the pump has to be able to keep up, and the resevoir should be storing some pressure. push firmly on the pedal, hard, and all the way down. release and do it again. on the third or forth one, you will probably hear the pump start to run. i have never tested a new accumulator in this test. if you can keep doing this for a couple of minutes, then i would say you have nothing to worry about in that area.
there is a diagnostic system on the abs. small 2 pin plug. search back through my threads to feb this year for zig's posting on abs sensor fault codes.
a good thing to do would be to pull abs sensors and blast clean, also shoot some contact cleaner in the connections for the wheel sensors. and the abs computer connector.
good luck
