solenoid plug in case he is still way off. did he say if the dist was loose at all?
those timing lights with advance built in are always a concern to me, i prefer the simple type that just fires when it gets a spark. that way you can clearly see where it is (bright sunlight excluded!).

glad he is moving again- i hate giving money to random mechanics for faux diagnosis/improper repairs!
