You actually want to be in series with the battery to measure amps, not parallel.
You need to set up your meter to measure amps. Your manual for the meter should help with that...If not, tell me what you have for a meter, and I'll see what I can do.
You need to lift the negative lead off of the battery terminal.
Then you connect your meter (set to measure amps) to the battery and the cable. IE the black lead from your meter gets connected to the negative terminal of the battery. The red lead from your meter gets connect to the negative battery cable. (The meter goes in between the battery terminal and the battery cable that was connected to the terminal.)
Make sense? You want to measure all of the little electrons that are flowing through this circuit, so you connect the meter so that any of the electrons leaving the battery (or holes travelling to the battery...er whatever it is that hole flow theorists believe... ;) ) have to go through your meter to get to where they are going.
It should be noted that if you try to start the car with your meter in place, you usually get to buy a new meter. :)
Good luck--
If you don't have a meter, you can usually just stick a 12v bulb in instead...the car shouldn't draw enough current to light the bulb--if it does, it's to much.
