Well, then-the amp section of a meter is usually fused seperately. Could be your fuse (in the meter) is gone.
If you've got a few bits of wire around (and three hands. :) ) you could take a 12V bulb and try to light it straight off the battery (wire from each terminal to the bulbs terminals)...does it light? OK, then. Put the meter in the circuit (wire from battery(+) to a bulb terminal, meter (+) on other terminal of bulb, meter (-) on battery(-)--meter set at an appropriate scale (current=watts/12---so a 6 watt bulb should give you .5 amps (or 500milliamps) you go ahead and do the math, then). The bulb should light, and the meter should show your calculated current.
Alternatively--if your dome light works with the battery connected normally (open the door, the light comes on), but it doesn't light with the meter in the circuit (and the meter shows 0), then either your meter isn't set right (sounds like it is), or the meter fuse is blown.
