I have an 87 900s, 89 900T, 91 900 4-door and 94 900TC. They are all 5-speeds...they all have strengths and weaknesses. (Disclaimer here...the following are just one guy's opinions.) So here goes: The post 88 front caliper/rear handbrake combo is good. Aviod the 89/90 automatic seat belts. Jury is out on the ABS (91 and 94TC); it works fine but is expensive to repair and provides sort of a strange pedal feel. I think the 87 900S (now with 300,000 mi.) has been the easiest to keep going. Doesn't accelerate like the turbos, but gets better milage and goes just as fast once you get there. Engine management is a bit pirimative and it vibrates at idle. Easy to check and change the transmission fluid as it still has filler tubes and drains. Same engine as the turbos but less wear and tear & very easy to work on. The 89T is second as it has the newer brakes. I've removed the automatic seat belts. Its heavily modified though so doesn't really count. The 91 4-door is really smooth; the 2.1 L engine and newer engine mamagement system seems to run with minimal vibration. Sweet ride but much less panache than the 3-doors and CV. The 94TC is the most sophisticated of the bunch...a bit harder to work on. It has a lot of body flex and doesn't feel handle as solid as the others. But with the top down you have to smile, which is good.
