I agree the original bullnose has a more authentic look to it. I've only driven pre-88s and would say hands down the AT should be avoided if at all possible especially if you are running an NA. CIS is easy to work on - at least my experience but not easy to find parts for. Although most on this site probably associate the real SAAB look with the hatchback design, I've always thought the sedan a nicer looking vehicle. If you look at similar European vehicles of that vintage - eg BMW and Peugeot for example - you'll see that they had a similar kind of upright and sturdy shape in comparison to the 900 sedan.
In sum, I'd say a pre 88 5 speed four door without a Turbo. If you can find one gently driven and rust free buy it. Second option - 88 or 89 four door NA rust free.
Maybe its just me but I see more turbos in the junk yard that have been trashed due to accidents than NAs - maybe its because there were more of them I don't know. What it tells me if true is that Turbos may not have been as gently driven.
