Loud buzzing/humming from tank

Ok a few months back I heard a slight buzzing noise coming from the rear, the car began to shudder as if running out of gas. Tank was low so I filled up and it went away and all was normal. Had it happen again a few weeks ago with closer to just under a quarter in. Same deal, fill and go. Now today I have half a tank of gas, after driving 45 minutes 30 feet from the garage door the noise comes back and is REALLY loud and the car shudders. I thought is was the secondary pump and keeping the tank up would keep everything fine. Is the main pump actually failing? They are expensive aren't they and a pain to replace?
