First, I'd go with a turbo every time. "Yeah, I got a toy, but I got the slower toy" is a justification that will pale in short order.
Yes, the two door notchback might be rare, but for good reason. It might be cute, but it's not very useful. Access isn't very good; the hatchback is much more useful. Yes, it's a toy, but it's nice to have a toy that can haul stuff.
The '86 turbo will be a 16 valve with LH fuel injection. It's a nice combination. I had a '86T, and it was a great engine.
A car in that shape should be very, very cheap. It'll cost a lot to fix it up - interior bits aren't cheap. You could do it cheaper, but you'll need a parts car.
It all depends on what you mean by "keep me busy." Buying a car in poor condition and no records will keep you very busy. You'll be spending a buch of time on it, and will need parts.
Toys come in two forms. You can spend more, and buy a car in nice shape. It'll still need work, but you get to drive more. Or you can pick up a basket case, and work on that. Getting it running again can be a great experience and a lot of fun, but it might be a while before it's on the road.
The middle ground is a bad bet - buying a car cheap with lots of issues, and assuming you can drive it with just a little work.
It all depends on what you're looking to do - there isn't a wrong decision, as long as it's an informed one. Personally, I'd spend more (money and time looking) for a car in better shape, and a color I wanted. It'll need TLC,but I'll get to drive it.
