thermostat stud welding?

Got a Wahler 88 to replace the stat which had been running hot. Turned out it was a "Motorad" 83 -never heard of that - who put that in - not me. Didn't know for sure what temp stat was in there- thought it was a saab 89. Well despite being careful the 1 oclock bolt(closest to the fuel rail) sheared rather cleen at 1-1.5 threads showing and about 1/2 inch still in the block- if its the same size as the outer (7oclock) bolt. Thought to try use PB, drill the center and reverse tap out. Then realized a company I do computers for had stud welders - so question is
If I put the stud weld gun on the bolt and shoot/weld a new threaded stud onto the old bolt shaft, do I gotta worry about the instantaneous heat of the stud gun cracking the block???? .I thought to then try back out the old now extended stud- but why look for more trouble? just put the stat housing on and a nut on it. I've been adding PB Blaster to the thread all day trying to lube it - I've read that PB may not be much help with iron on AL - maybe the PB lube will act as a buffer to the expansion heat of the stud gun. Any thoughts?
