I also used an oil extractor (Topsider brand) to suction out the oil from the reservoir and then from the hoses. This left very little oil to run out. I had thought of cutting the hoses off but never thought of your idea of taking it out with them attached!
I replaced all the hoses. It doesn't make any sense to try to reinstall brittle 20 year old hoses when doing this job.
My tip: on the small diameter return hose, use a cutting wheel to cut off the crimp. Then go to your auto parts store and buy some 3/8" (10mm) steering return hose - the low pressure stuff. I paid $12.99. Use a hose clamp to attach it. This is a low pressure application so no need for a crimped hose like the pressure hose.
In my experience, it's the fat supply hose that usually gets brittle and leaks where it is clamped to the PS pump, so I replace this one as well.
