You're fortunate that the old stereo isn't in the upper slot. I think it will be easiest to remove the center console so you can see the tabs that probably hold your cage in place, and get back there w/ a flathead screwdriver to release them. And while it's out, you can install the new head and access your speakers' wiring a bit easier.
Pull the accordion thing in front of your shifter out and remove the ash tray, and remove the torx screws on floor and bolt at ash tray. Remove the screws on each side of the console to release it from the upholstered thing that sits behind it. Then pull both to the passenger side and you should see your old stereo's wiring harness (when you move the console, be careful that the tabs at the bottom clear the shifter console, so you don't snap them off).
If you get your new head someplace like Crutchfield.com, you can get a wiring harness that will match right up, you just need to solder the new harness wiring to your head's wires. Or figure out which wires go to which speakers, mark them with tape. Cut the old harness and match it up w/ your new head's wiring, which will probably be marked clearly. Replace the upholstered thing, connect the harnesses or connect your wiring, maneuver the console back into position, and replace screws in reverse order. If you're doing it in cold conditions, just be careful with any of the plastic.
