I'm not a car buff but I have test driven a few Saabs (esp older ones) and I loved the smooth powerful ride and the fold-down seats and wonderful cargo space; also, a mechanic friend of mine says they have some of the best engines in the world.
I almost bought a 1993 Saab 900 s manual transmission. The a/c was not working and so that would require $150 recharge plus dye to determine where the seemingly slow leak was and then possibly up to a $1000 repair, depending (I don't think it was the compressor). Owner had sort of minimized that issue perhaps hoping I was a little naive and suggesting all that was needed was the recharge; but I researched it on this board. The muffler needed replacing and some oxygen sensor, also, the headliner was sagging but I didn't mind. I really liked the velour seats, the cargo space, and the quirks like the cupholder on the door etc. The clutch was recently replaced and good.
Owner wanted $1300 but given those problems I offered $1000 and he accepted tho he said he'd hoped for more. My mechanic had said don't pay more than $1000 after he looked at it (mainly because of the a/c issue I think).
There was a nice aftermarket radio with iPod adapter--the removable kind. The case for removing the front was on the front seat when we test drove it, and since he drove the car to work daily in NYC, we figured he used it. I was to purchase the car Friday. On Friday morning he called me to say the radio had been stolen, without any damage to the car whatsoever--nada. He suggested I replace the radio myself from ebay or he could give me an old Saab radio. I said I loved the car but the deal was off in such a case (I felt it was his responsibility--we made a deal based on the car as is and now it didn't have one of the features I most liked, the iPod adapter and removable radio). He thought about it and said he'd try to replace it and put it in himself since they hadn't cut any wires etc. But he also said that now he'd continue showing it to others.
I called off the deal as I felt that was unethical. We had a deal--he either took the radio out himself because he didn't like the price I offered but is moving soon and figured I'd still buy the car...or it coincidentally got stolen with no damage at all the night before my purchase...in the latter case because he left the entire radio in the car...
What does anybody think about all this? I kind of feel he probably just took the radio out himself but who knows. May I ask saab owners here, if you were in the same situation, and your stereo WAS stolen, would you feel ethically compelled to replace it--or would you now show it to others after the deal, hoping to find someone who didn't mind not having a stereo?
I am going to keep looking at older Saabs because I really like so many features of them.
