Jen,
The concern about the Air conditioning is important. Personally, I only had one or two 900s that had working air condtioning. And even though they can surely be fix, the air for some reason is not the coolest in comparison to other makes. Others are sure to disagree.
The A/C comes from the center vents, anf two small vents on either side of the dashboard With the weather getting warmer, that may be a serious factor.
Will you drive mostly in the city?
If this is the case, then the hard ride may also become a factor.
A good car that may suit you is a Subaru Outback, it has loads of cargo, and they run well. A 1997/1998 goes for about 2,000 to 3500 depending on the condition and mileage. The only thing with that model is overheating, and warp cylinder heads. Once that is fix, it can be a very good car. The Air conditioning usually work, and then you have the advantage of the four wheel drive, and again the huge cargo room(seats fold down too) in the back.
Lastly, the manual is a major factor in my opinion. Automatic is simply easy drving.. One has to really like the art of stick shift to deal with it. If not, it gets tired fast.
At the end, it may be best to go with your gut feeling. Let us know how it turns out..
Good luck
