Not much amperage actually goes through the ignition switch. The main power for the car is actually handled by the "ignition lock" relay under the hood... all the ignition switch does is turn on the relay. The starter is powered directly by the battery, all the ignition switch does it power the solenoid. All the other big consumers of power are wired directly to the battery (like the fuel injection system) or through their own relays (like the fuel pump). The ignition switch really doesn't do much...
