Yes, the friction material is thin to begin with but adjusting them does not hasten the death of the transmission.
The bands are not self-adjusting as many cars are so we, as the owners, need to have it done ourselves. The problem is that many times we wait too long before making the adjustment. The band material gets too thin from driving with it slipping for so long. Making the adjustment will give it some more time before death comes a knocking but death will arrive.
It's like if you drive your car without oil (need a band adjustment) until it knocks (slipping in gear). You add oil but the damage has already been done. You certainly don't blame the new oil for hastening the death of the engine, right?
Band adjustments should be done at about 100,000 miles IMHO.
