Brake Booster - Post Mortum Posted by dave24 [Email] (#457) [Profile/Gallery] (more from dave24) on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 02:44:28 In Reply to: Brake Booster Needs Replacement - Any Advice?, dave24 [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 17 Jun 2009 17:12:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This past weekend I completed the install of the brake booster on our 88 900TC. While I was concerned about how difficult this would be, I have to say that it was not bad. The responses to my initial query gave me the confidence to tear into it.
Things that I did that helped:
1. Removed the knee bolster. Wow did this help to gain access to those 4 booster bolts. I had never removed one of these before, but it came out relatively easily once I found the bolts on either side under the hood. The pictures and write-up on FixMySaab helped out.
2. Remove the left speaker cover and drape your drop light so it shines down into the cavity behind the dash. This was such s help as it illuminated the area well, the light did not impede on the space where I was working, and I didn’t have to hold the light with one hand and remove bolts etc with the other.
3. I tried to sneak the booster out without removing the brake master, but found that it wasn’t happening. So I drained the master and removed it. Also, I had to slacken the alternator adjuster and swing it out of the way. I bled the system (clutch and brakes) afterward. Used the reverse clutch bleed process described elsewhere on this site – it works so well. Since I was in there bleeding the clutch, I decided to also replace the failed hydraulic transmission mount. Probably added an hour to the job, but it was in need.
So thanks to this community again. DIY Is keeping these fine old classics on the road.
