Its intermittent, seems to not occur when I drive like a grandma, usually happens on initial engagement of the clutch, or when I shift and begin to accelerate. goes away if I back off the throttle and drive like said grandma. it happens only when the driveline is loaded. I jack up the car and stop one wheel from turning . then rotate the driver front wheel back and forth lock to lock with the trans in gear. It makes a loud smack when it reaches the limit. That noise comes from the front primary housing area. also makes a sound like a dry spring. It sounds like a bad cv joint when you turn in a tight radius.
