Took the car to a former Saab tech friend and had him drive the car. His feelings were that it was coming from the ring and pinion or the spider gears. He said drain the trans and inspect the shavings on the magnet, and pull the diff cover to inspect for damage. There was a normal amount of shavings on the magnet, and the internal workings were well worn in their 250k miles or so that are on the trans. The pinion housing is not cracked, and there are no teeth missing or damaged anywhere. I put all that back together and pulled out my stethascope. listening to the primary chain housing I can hear the chain is really sloppy in there. The whole tranny has its share of slop with a quarter million miles on it. Tonight Im pulling out the clutch to inspect the components and Im going to replace the throw out bearing because its dry and worn out. Maybe Ill find something wrong in there.
