Hey Saabnutt,
When I changed the original fluid 3 weeks ago, the old fluid was dark, but there were no particles in it. It was actually very clean. I'm fairly certain the clunking noise is coming from inside the gearbox as I can repeat the noise by very lightly jockeying the shifter with the car still, half-way engaging into first after it has been coasting in neutral coming to a stop. It almost sounds to a transmission layman such as myself that something is able to move more freely than it ought to be able to, and engaging the trans into 1st after being in another gear "re-alligns" something, hence the "clunk".
