What bolts into driver's side block

Please help. I have an 8516VT. The replacement of my head gasket has been over a 2 year process. I see two holes in the driver's side block. These holes have threads and it looks like something should screw into these holes. One is near the starter bracket and is horizontal and the other is just above that and to the left and is vertical. The only thing I have bolted into that side of the block is the knock sensor. Anyone know why these two holes are in the block or what I should attach to these holes?
