All years have their downsides... always outweighed by the positives depending on preference.

Pre '87 has the "bull nose" as mentioned above. I also think this is the change over to the water cooled turbo.

Pre '88 has old style brakes (solid disks front, older less common lug bolt pattern and less common calipers).

1989 has the passive belt system (many have been changed over to "normal" belts- and it is not that hard to do as a DIY). They do NOT have ABS as suggested above. And no airbag.

1990 was the last year of the turbo 4-door. The passive belts are gone too. This is the 1st year of ABS & airbags and remained until the C900 production ended. Many do not like the ABS and airbag system. Both add complexity and reduce reliability somewhat. I have had cars with and without ABS/airbag. I find the added hassle of ABS worth it, and the systems are relatively simple. The only downside is my indu has to reset my SRS light after I do airbag/SRS repair.

1991 - 1993 All C900s got headlamp washers (which I like!). The non-turbos got 2.1L engines which increased HP from 131 to 140. Some say the 2.1L head is prone to failure, others deny this. Seats were changed to 9000 seats. I think this is the 1st year of the non turbo convertible.

1994 - only the convertible is made in the C900 body style.

There are numerous other smaller changes. This board is a wealth of information, and I would do numerous searches!

All C900s have dashes that crack easily. Rust is usually a deal breaker. A well cared for high mileage Saab is a better deal (in general) than a lower mileage rusted out one.

Transmissions can go, especially on turbos that are used hard. I still would buy a turbo though, sooo much fun.

Headgaskets can go bad and leak.

Check for rust at the right lower (front) A arm

Unless you are a well seasoned Saab nut, I would have any potential C900 looked over by a reputable indy.
