It's purely a function of the gears, tire diameters and your speed...
2000 RPM would be 30+ mph per thousand revs. That's usually in the court of the non-turbo European transmissions. As I recall, the US never got that version of the 5-speed. Best ours did - on the non-turbo gearboxes - was a bit under 30 MPH per thousand. Turbo transmissions are quite a bit lower.
If I recall, 5th gear was in the range of 0.8 : 1 on the non-turbo gearboxes in the US, and 0.94 : 1 on the turbos. but my memory of those details isn't what it used to be...
It's possible that your clutch is slipping. Do the RPMs change if you lift off the throttle (the slipping clutch would usually grab here) and get on it? And by change, I DON'T mean the normal, steady climb or fall associated with a locked up clutch, but a much more extreme motion of the tach relative to the speedo.
As I recall, my 900s were always in the realm of 2500-2800 at 60 MPH...
If you really want to hear the motors scream, try a 4 speed 99 (before the chain drop gear), or any 99 or 900 auto trans...
