First off, any Saab designed after the C900 is destined to be more crash-worthy than the C900. PERIOD. I swear, if I win a lottery prize, I will pay Saab to crash a perfectly good C900 against a much newer Saab to prove it.
And also remember that the C900 was very good in crash tests when new, not when the tin worm has been working at it for 20 years...
I know NG 900 owners who cringed when they saw the 9-3SS crash tests compared to the tests on their cars. The newer car was so much better than the older car.
Crashworthiness is a constantly moving target. A C900 compared extremely well against other cars of its same era, but cannot compare favorably against much newer cars designed to very different standards. This includes cars from makers not historically known for building "safe" cars. I seriously doubt that a C900 would place very high in the current crash tests. That's not to say the C900 is a death trap, but simply a reflection of the different world we live in.
NG900s rarely have engine failures. The engine failures on the 9-3 and 9-5 can almost always be traced to poor engine maintenance. You MUST change the oil regularly, and you MUST use a quality oil, and you MUST NOT do too much short trip driving. It is true that earlier incarnations of the crankcase ventilation system contribute to the failures, but had the owner maintained the car in accordance with the Saab guidelines, they likely would not have experienced engine failures.
If you should find yourself interested in the 9-5 with the V6, the single item that will get you is failure to replace the timing belt, tensioner and pulleys at 60k intervals. If you don't do that, it'll cost over $5,000 to put right. If you can live with that, the V6 is a very nice motor. Quiet and smooth, with plenty of power. I miss mine.
