see the Folksam report - they have a new one out for 2009. The C900 rates as average. I believe last time around, it rated as above average, but as Larry notes, it's a sliding scale. One should note the NG900 also rates average, but the 9-3 hatch (superficially the same as NG900) rates good, as they made a bunch of safety improvements to it. For many years, 9-5 (and before it, 9000) were "safest car in sweden" in the report. Now there are many cars that rate as "safest".
My impression is that the biggest improvement in safety comes with the 9-5 which was designed to solve the SUV side impact problem (hinged B pillar design). Saab was first on the ball on this - crashing Land Rovers into 9000's 10 years before IIHS added the test. afaik, OG 9-3 doesn't have this. NG 9-3 was the first (and only for a while) car to get top marks in all IIHS testing, the first year the side impact was added...
Aside from the SUV side impact test, an intact c900 is pretty good, and the good handling makes it great at avoiding accidents in the first place...
good luck!
James...
