1994 Comm ed CVT, 86K miles.
I repaired my clutch hydraulics a couple weeks ago and put in a new clutch. Driving the car now, I have trouble with second gear. It grinds sometimes, but not always. Usually I have to shift real slow and carefully make sure I go left and down to get it to go in smoothly. Downshifting is impossible, it grinds every time unless the car is under 15MPH. Every other gear is smooth as silk. When I was doing the clutch, I cleaned the motor of all the fluid residue that leaked from the failed slave. I noticed fluid dripping at the rear gearbox cover when I was under there. One whiff told me it was gearbox oil. I checked the level and it was not even registering. I added over a quart of 10W-30 motor oil. I still had the shifting problem. Yesterday I drained the gearbox, cleaned the filter and magnet, and refilled with Redline MTL. I also checked the shifter alignment and made sure the shifter housing was securely attached to the floor. Motor mounts are about a year old and are solid mounts. Still no change...
Is my 2nd gear synchro on it's way out or could it be something else I've overlooked? If it is the synchro, Is that a DIY job (I'm very mechanically competent). Is a transmission rebuild manual available?
