Sounds like a failed 2nd gear synchro, and interestingly a problem I've had with several '92+ 900Ts. I've had it once in an earlier car, but on three later ones.
You're talking a teardown, and yes a manual is available... the factory transmission book from a dealer or ebay.
Most of it can be done at home, but several parts are critical and some special tools needed. I would strongly suggest not driving the car or skipping second - gear clusters are not available new anymore and good ones somewhat hard to find. Every grind is another chance you'll trash that gear and end up adding that to your rebuild parts hunt.
